Moving within your own city or state is complex enough. Moving from one state to another in India adds a significant layer of additional tasks — documentation updates, tax implications, state-specific vehicle registration changes, new utility connections, school transfers, and much more. Missing any one of these can cause problems months after the move.
This comprehensive interstate moving checklist has been developed based on 15 years of pan-India relocation experience at KCM Packers and Movers. We've organized it into clear phases so you can execute your interstate move systematically and calmly.
8–12 Weeks Before Your Move
The foundation of every subsequent task — don't start other steps without a confirmed destination address.
Good interstate movers get booked weeks in advance, especially for end-of-month moves. An IBA Approved company like KCM should be your first call.
Identify schools, hospitals, grocery stores, public transport, and local services near your new address before arriving.
If you're selling or renting your current home, get a property valuation. Also estimate the replacement value of your belongings for insurance.
Interstate transport is priced partly by volume and weight. Everything you don't move saves money. Sell, donate, or discard ruthlessly.
HR needs time to process state-specific tax and PF/ESIC changes. If you're transferring offices, ensure the transfer letter is in place.
4–8 Weeks Before Your Move
Aadhaar is the bedrock of identity verification in India. File an address update via the UIDAI portal or nearest Aadhaar centre with proof of new address (lease agreement or utility bill at new address).
The RTO requires a Form 33 application with proof of new address, your existing licence, and passport photos. Interstate moves may also trigger vehicle re-registration requirements.
If you're taking a vehicle to a new state, you must apply for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the current state RTO and then register the vehicle in the new state within 12 months.
While PAN number remains the same, updating your address with the IT department ensures tax communications reach you. Update via the NSDL or UTIITSL portal.
Inform all your banks — savings, current, salary, fixed deposit, and loan accounts — of your new address. Update KYC with the new address proof.
Health insurance, vehicle insurance, home insurance, and life insurance policies should reflect your new address to avoid claim complications.
If children are moving, apply for Transfer Certificates from their current school. Research admission procedures at the destination school and initiate contact early.
2–4 Weeks Before Your Move
Before your packers and movers arrive, confirm your goods insurance coverage with KCM or arrange supplemental coverage for high-value items via our goods insurance service.
Schedule disconnection of electricity, gas, water, internet, and DTH/cable at your current home. Timing it for the day after you leave avoids gaps.
Contact service providers at the new location — electricity board, gas agency, broadband, and water supply. Some require in-person visits to the new address.
Give required notice as per your rental agreement (typically 1–3 months). Arrange building NOC, society dues clearance, and get your security deposit refund process started.
Business owners must update their GSTIN with the new state/place of business. GST registration is state-specific — a new state means a new state code in your GSTIN.
You can't vote in elections at your new constituency without re-registering. Apply to delete your name from the current constituency's voter list and register at the new address.
Moving Week Tasks
First 30 Days After Moving
Many interstate move tasks are only actionable after you've arrived and have proof of your new address:
Verify internet, electricity, gas, and water are all functioning correctly at the new home
Update your address with your mobile network operator (for KYC compliance)
Begin Aadhaar address update (requires new address proof — lease, utility bill)
Update your address with the Income Tax Department via the e-filing portal
Register with your new local police station if required (mandatory in some states)
Initiate vehicle re-registration at the new state RTO (present NOC from previous state)
Enrol children in new school with Transfer Certificate from previous school
Apply for new Voter ID at your new constituency
Update your address on your Passport (optional but recommended)
Explore and register with local services — doctor, dentist, gyms, societies
